Eight countries have a total of 24,000 nuclear weapons – 400,000 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb.
The world spends more than $100 billion each year on nuclear weapons.
There have been 2,119 nuclear explosions in the past 70 years.
This is a massive drain on the world’s economy, and the continued existence of nuclear weapons is a grave threat to all humanity. The United Nations Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is a key international agreement to control nuclear proliferation. In May 2015, there will be a UN Review Conference on this treaty.
I support an end to all nuclear weapons, and call for:
- Every country to join the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) and give it their full support, to stop the spread of nuclear weapons
- A new global agreement to eliminate nuclear weapons by 2020
- The billions spent on nuclear weapons to be used instead for peaceful purposes.
